Aims of the Programme This BSc Year in International Business (Dubai) programme offers students studying on programmes across the University of Birmingham the opportunity to study for a year at the University of Birmingham Dubai campus and gain a sound understanding of international business management.

Through study on this programme students will gain an understanding of Business Management within a regional and international context as a broad discipline and develop an appreciation of research relevant to that discipline. Students on this programme will gain intellectual grounding, core knowledge and understanding of international business and it also offers students the opportunity to develop their intellectual skills, analytical skills, problem-solving skills and communication skills which are crucial within the world of business. Transferable skills are key to this programme where students through formative and summative assessment will develop their communication and team working skills whilst also being provided with a breadth of knowledge of business management. The underlying philosophy of the programme is that students can study a mix of core 1st year international business management modules, with one module focusing on responsible business, reflecting School’s mission As this programme is unique to the Dubai campus students will be offered the opportunity to study a 10 credit optional module Arabic Language (1).

The skills that students will develop and the experiences they will have are highlighted as follows:

• Apply critical thinking and analytical skills – notably, the ability to filter and assess complex arguments.
• Develop a sensitivity to different international and cultural perspectives within business.
• Critically self-reflect and develop employability and transferable skills.
• Develop communication skills both written and verbal.

Delivery of all modules on this programme will be through a mix of lectures, seminars, class discussions, readings, case studies, media, invited guest speakers and online webinars. Assessment of the programme will be through formative and summative assessment and will include a mix of assessment methods across the modules, including: formal exams, essays, group work and oral presentations.

On completion of this one year programme students will be equipped with the knowledge and skills that can be utilised when they return to their degree programme, and also after graduation where they may wish to seek employment or further study in the discipline of international business.
